An open letter: why our free plan isn't going anywhere

Last week, our COO Tom sent this letter to EmailOctopus subscribers on our free plan.

A few people asked if they could share it, so we're publishing it here in full, exactly as it landed in inboxes.

You might have noticed some of the other email platforms cutting back their free plans recently, and a few of you have asked whether we're going to do the same anytime soon. After all, our free plan at EmailOctopus is pretty generous, covering up to 2,500 subscribers with almost everything included, automations and all.

We're not. And here is why:

We have a firm belief that email marketing should be within reach of anyone starting out. Ten years ago, in a pre-EmailOctopus world, Jonathan and I were both starting businesses and side-projects ourselves. Back then, every subscription came out of our own pockets and when it shows up on your personal bank statement – alongside essentials like coffee and rent – even a few £ a month is something you think carefully about. Many of you are in a similar position today, launching a new business, running a fundraiser or testing an idea alongside the day job. You should be able to give that idea its best shot without worrying about how it's paid for.

Of course, giving away free email marketing does cost us. Each email costs money to send, and we have a (human) support team on hand to guide you. Those things add up.

So there's a second, less romantic reason: the free plan helps us grow.

By giving away email for free, we hope in time some of you will become paying customers as your project grows. Some will recommend EmailOctopus to a friend, leave a nice Google review, or mention us in a Facebook group. And some will never pay us a penny, which is more than ok with us. The free plan we see as a long-term investment, both in you and in us, and because we're independent and profitable, we can afford to take that long view.

So, one small ask (and no, not to upgrade!). I'd love to know what you're building or contributing to, and how we can help with that. Is there a feature missing from the platform? Or is there something creative you're using EmailOctopus for? Just hit reply. One of the team might get back to you before I do, but I read everything that comes in.

And if you know someone who'd get value from EmailOctopus, please mention us to them and spread the word. You can see some ways you can help us grow here.

Thank you,

Tom Chief Operating Officer (aka the one who looks after pricing and product decisions)
